As some of you may know, I entered Generation Z into the Kindle Scout program with no idea what to expect. The pot at the end of the rainbow is a publishing contract with Amazon, which means they use their resources to promote the book, which needless to say, is a lot greater than the resources I have. Since it’s such a new program, there’s not much data to be found on it. The campaign didn’t start off like gangbusters, but in my mind, it ended very well, spending 89 hours in the Hot and Trending list (all in the last five days) and getting a little over 550 page views.
I was pretty stoked about that because I’m humbled if anyone likes my work! Alas, it didn’t get selected, but it was a good and anxiety riddled experience. And during that time, I was able to write Books One – Four of the Gutter Dogs series and a full length novel to cap the series off – the one that’s currently making it’s campaign run, Warriors.
Honestly, I feel like it’s the best thing I’ve written so far and I feel like I’m really finding and developing my voice and style with the book. I’m not just saying that so you go nominate it and get a free copy if it wins 😉
I wrote this book differently than the others. Generation Z had an entire outline and scene by scene breakdown of where it was going. For this book, I took my hero, Elmore Leonard’s advice, and just wrote it so I could be just as surprised as the reader as to where it went. I just had an idea of the story and a few ideas of what would happen, and I let the characters do the rest. The result of which was an exhilarating experience where I couldn’t stop writing or thinking about the characters.
Here’s the link for the Scout campaign, Warriors on Scout and here’s a link to the Warriors page on this site so you can get a more detailed synopsis of the book.
In other news, I’ve embarked on another novel, called Mr. Miracle, and it’s going well, if not a tad slower than I think my normal pace is. I’ve been writing it and also getting distracted by the marketing end of this business, which I’m afraid I still have a very long way to go with. I’m also planning on emailing the subscribers to this site in the next day or two, and they’ll get an advance on the first chapter or two from the book. So if you haven’t already, subscribe now! I feel guilty emailing people, so most of the time I’ll be giving something away when I do send out an email.
After Mr. Miracle is finished, I hope to pen a western called “The Dogs Come Out at Night,” which I’m pretty excited about. Hopefully, I can get them done before the end of the year.
I’m still trying to figure out how to get samples of the books to show up on the pages, kind of like Amazon’s Look Inside feature. Be patient, I’m new at this! Hopefully, that’ll be taken care of soon.
And as much as I was thinking Warriors would end the Gutter Dogs series, I can’t help but thinking of a follow-up chronicling Hurricane Cain McBain’s foray into the porn industry. For those that have read any of the series, you know his name used to be Main Vein Cain McBain.
As an indie author, we can use all the help we can get, so if you enjoy what we’re building, please pass it along to friends and family. And remember, the best way to stay up to date is to sign up for the mailing list!
Write On,
Carey
